I am thinking about buying a 99 Jeep cherokee sport with 80,000 miles.How reliable are there auto trannys?
i have a 2000 XJ with 140k miles. No tranny probs at all. Assuming it is the 4.0L 6 and auto tranny - they are among the most reliable transmissions on the road assuming they had some maintenance over its life as suggested before. In fact the tranny for the XJ is made by the same company that makes Toyota transmissions.
If you will be towing with it get a tranny cooler. Heat kills. But the drivetrain of the Cherokees is almost bulletproof. Routinely go 300k miles without a rebuild. 99's have a rare, but not unheard of issue with cracking head. I certainly would still buy one and not be concerned with that issue.
